This is technically my second B36 / Evancio from Hinze Pen Co. (the first being a full custom that involved collaboration with other custom pen artisans). The Heimdall is the pen that originally caught my attention and is why I went with Jim for my original custom.
After such a positive experience with the first pen (and knowing how well the big B36 sizing fits my hands), I decided to jump at a Heimdall when it came up on the site....they don't typically stay long as they are that good and in high demand as a result.
After placing the order, I received a welcome email. I responded noting the past pen (which was remembered) and indicated that was using my own email rather than our family one. I also asked a question about the possibility of a piston fill B36 (maybe even a Heimdall version) in the future. Jim wrote back... and the idea became a reality.
So, this review is for a Heimdall piston fill version (the first of many he'll make, I'm sure). The exclusive Diamondcast blanks he uses for this signature pen are a swirly wash of gold, silver, copper and bronze...absolutely stunning! It is a big pen, and has a decent mass as a result, but it is not a heavy pen by big pen standards. The body and cap are meticulously made with everything mating beautifully.
Taking off the cap, the threads are a nice step down and out of the way of the ample section (you don't feel them at all). The section matches the body and is nicely flared to keep the pen where you want it.
Beautiful finial, and Jim sent a bronze clip as he felt it looked better than the standard black on the Heimdall. He wasn't wrong.
The ti nib is a work of art, and includes the Hinze emblem now. My EF, when coupled with the monstrous ~2.5 ml ink capacity, will be writing for a good, long time. I've paired it with some Diamine Yule Log to keep the bronze/copper vibe going. Ti bouncy and smooth with that characteristic pencil on paper audible feedback... exquisite and sublime.
The Heimdall is a stunning pen, fits big hands well and was the flagship of Jim's offerings for a good reason (yes, I know, the König has replaced it). Jim makes excellent pens and this is one of his best, hands down. Add to it his willingness to have fun trying something different (like a piston fill Heimdall) and you know you get a fantastic quality pen from a master artisan who loves to pour his soul into his craft. Superb once again, sir!
(So, if you don't have a Hinze pen yet, why not? ;) )
